Géricault Sketchbook

Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault
French, 1791–1824
Sketchbook, 1813-14
Graphite with brush and brown wash, pen and iron gall ink, black crayon and black pastel, on ivory laid and cream wove papers, digitally reassembled in a later binding according to Lorenz Eitner's published order in "Géricault: An Album of Drawings in the Art Institute of Chicago," University of Chicago Press, 1960.
Margaret Day Blake Collection, 1947.35.34-61

This digitally-rebound volume consists of 28 folios with drawings and sketches in several media showing horses, pets, society portraits and other subjects drawn by Géricault around 1813-14. The drawings in this book and in a second sketchbook were disbound and later rematted to be displayed as separate drawings. The second sketchbook, from 1818-19 has also been digitized, using the same cover, a type of paper over boards binding that Géricault himself might have used.
